Melatonin, is it effective?
Hey guys - wanted to ask what’s your experiences of melatonin if you’ve tried it for sleep purposes, how effective did you find it?
The NHS site says it’s also prescription only - swear you used to be able to get it in the health food shops, am guessing laws on psychoactive drugs mean its prescription only now. So I wanted to hear your thoughts/experiences before going down that route. thanks all in advance 💚

I've used it a lot over the years to help reset my sleep patterns around shift work, and found it varies in effectiveness depending on the brand, as well as the dose. High doses don't work well for me. Best is a brand called Vitafusion who do a product called SleepWell. It's formulated with 3mg per 2 gummies, and it was so effective for me that I'd find myself drifting off to sleep without trying. No other dose or brand ever did that. Still available from a popular auction site, and I've never had any stopped by customs.

Yes it's now prescription only, and what you're getting is obviously a controlled, pharmacological version of a bio-available / plant-based form.

I've been using it for years due to diagnosed circadian rhythm disturbance and generally many years of poor sleep. Overall I've found it very helpful in helping me maintain a fairly consistent sleep wake cycle. I'm only using a very small dose, just 2mcg / mg.

However, I've recently started using a plant melatonin called Herbatonin at a 0.3mg dose so even lower than my prescription and it's as good if not better. I bought three months supply of the Symphony brand online for around £13. Maybe give that a go if it's within your reach and see how it suits.

At some point I'd like to not have to use it at all but I live with chronic illness so it's a bit tricky right now, but it'll happen when it happens. A decent amount of sufficient quality sleep is so crucial for health. I think many of us underestimate that. The "I'll sleep when I'm dead" crew may be reaching that point sooner than they think! 😱

There are some folks out there mega-dosing for all manner of health-related reasons, up to 100mg daily!!!!!!!!!!

Did absolutely nothing for me. Can’t believe it now needs a scrip🙄. Microdose Xanax still the best sleep aid imo, no negatives. That or Unicorn 🦄 Piss from Canadian Imports 🤤😴

Yeah mental it requires a prescription now - some further reading tells me that most Drs are reluctant to prescribe it, so probs not a viable route anyway. Obv can pick it up elsewhere thanks to the internet but from sounds of things, might be a bit bunk.

Microdosing Xanax carefully sounds interesting, can see how that one might work, just enough to send you off without giving yourself a dependence problem. Have tried Valium once or twice before as a post rave sleep aid - magic blue off buttons! I should note this definitely was one-off/emergency usage only, never regular (just a health warning for the benefit of anybody else reading - very easy to get hooked on benzos and very difficult to come off, from seeing ppl close to me who’ve developed a benzo addiction. Very nasty physical withdrawal symptoms)

And thanks for the tip on the unicorn piss! Ha yeah don’t usually do carts to keep tolerance down but might have to resort to a nice strong one to send me off for the night - heard some very good things about CI’s stuff, definitely keeping that one in mind 👌

Totally agree with your comments mate. I find with sleep aids the less you use them the better they work. Tolerance builds so quickly. I take 0.25mg (or less) of Xanax possibly twice a week if I’m wide awake in the middle of the night with a least 4 hours to go until I need to get up. Always works and I wake up very refreshed. Taken nightly it would stop working in a couple of weeks and knowing that means I have no incentive to increase dose or frequency.

I occasionally treat myself to a hit of the 🦄 at bedtime. Fall asleep with a big grin on my face!🤗

That sounds v regimented and sensible usage 👌 gives your body enough time to get it out your system too.

Those carts sound lush tbf, just been reading the posts from other peeps on CIs page - face meltingly good sleepy times all around from the sounds of things!! Very good price too, will check em out some point 👍

I bought about 1000 blue diazepam decades ago, and I took them all. That was a very unproductive number of months. Lovely with a G&T on a Sunday afternoon I found. Be careful not to kill yourself, obviously.

I used melatonin on and off for a few years. Making it prescription only is a bit over the top, but good for Big Pharma.

The only problem with melatonin is that it's a natural hormone we produce. So if you supplement with it too long, your body will make less.

Also, the trigger for your body to start releasing melatonin is darkness. So if you're using your phone or watching TV before sleep, you're body is not releasing it's own melatonin.

Red filters will help a lot, as it's the blue light that triggers our brain to wake up. It takes some time...30-45 minutes for me.

If I need help besides the filter I've added to my phone, I take a small THC edible.

Good luck, bad sleep is a serious problem. I have sleep apnea, where I stop breathing while asleep. You might want to check on that before you only self medicate.

My sleep got a LOT better when I started using a CPAP machine that keeps me breathing at night.

So please check with a doctor about that, it is life threatening.

I’ve tried melatonin gummies in the past. They worked great but used to get bad headaches the following day.
I also read that long term use can cause rebound insomnia so I quit.

melatonin defintley do the trick at helping you get to sleep but not so great for helping you stay asleep. great for a nap or if you redose half way through the night.

valerian root are good too and tend to keep you out longer.

please do not go down the benzos route as a long term solution (xanax & Valium) the withdrawals can be harsher than H
