I'm currently looking at different products like the mighty and the ace cup. The bottle of the latter product made me think of what we'd do back in the day to maximise our low strength hash by using a bottle and a bucket or a bottle and hot knives.

For those who have no idea what I'm on about:

Buckets:
A bucket would use a bucket of water - hence the name which I guess shows a lack of creativity of the period - with a large coke bottle with the bottom cut out in it and with a tin foil gauze on top of the open screw thread. There was a knack to lifting the bottle while you held a lighter to the hash to get it burning and fill the bottle with smoke as the water sucks air as you lift the bottle. It was possible to screw this up and have a hash eruption that would fire hot rocks in all directions over your mates parents carpet. Assuming you'd avoided that, you'd remove the gauze and put your mouth over the end of the bottle. Then inhale the smoke as you push the bottle back down into the bucket. This would fill your lungs with thick hash smoke.

Hot knives:
This involves another bottle with no bottom. Best to use glass - like a milk bottle. You'd raid the cutlery drawer and heat up two knives in a gas burner flame until really hot but not red hot. And yes the naming convention was still very much, 'it does what it says on the tin'. There were no ace hot knives or a mighty bucket as far as I'm aware. You'd pick up a tiny bit of hash with the hot knives and squeeze them together inside the bottle. It instantly turned most of the hash into thick smoke which you'd inhale from the bottle.

Other ways of heating the knives involved wedging them into all sorts of electrical appliances where knives probably should not be wedged.

Does anyone still do these? I've not even heard them mentioned for years. Seems a pretty basic and brutal process compared to the fancy devices you can get now. The ace cup looks so civilised in comparison. Like comparing an iPhone to two yoghurt pots on a length of string.

Orange Fandom:

I'm a fan of orange strains. I particularly like the dank bitter citrus tang of the old orange bud you got in the 'dam coffee shops along with the delayed sledgehammer stone that followed twenty mins after you smoke it. It's not for everyone but it is for me. There's a few orange strains I've had in the past like Orangina (KIG) or Orange Glue that have had the special taste and feel of nostalgia but it's seemingly not the most popular flavour.

On LB - of course - there's a fair few orange options to choose from so I thought it'd be fun to have an orange day and report my experience back. So I've ordered a mix of orange hash, orange weed and orange extracts to chase the flavour memories of the past.


Questions:

Will it be too much of a orange thing?
Will it bring back a taste of the past?
Will I be too stoned to care?

Orange Day - The Session:

This is the bit we've all been waiting for. I definitely have anyway. Everything before this was like the trailers at the cinema. But now the lights are going down, the volume is going up and the curtains are opening to full wide screen. I'm settling in to enjoy the ride. Please join me as the action kicks off. Hopefully my chair will be more comfortable though.


Tangie Berry:

First up, Tangie Berry. It may seem like an odd choice for orange day but this has a grandparent of original c-orange bud; the precise old flavour I'm chasing.

The Tangie Berry has a super strong smell to it. It's a really strong mix of gas and sour citrus rind. One of the strongest smells I've encountered. On arrival the closest smell I could equate it to was being like wd40 or furniture polish but after a couple of days in a jar it'd tamed to a more satisfyingly citrus / orangey aroma. It definitely doesn't smoke like wd40 so no one dive off down a conspiracy rabbit hole but it also doesn't carry the special dank tang of its old orange bud grandpa either. It's still a good start to the session and it definitely has tons of fruit flavour. It's so strong that the next couple of bits through the grinder pick up the smell. I'd buy this again despite the overwhelmingly curious fragrance.


Mixed with Orange Hash:

Mixing it with the orange n apricot static hash is a potent combination which should help move things forward at pace. The static hash is touch crumble and leaves you with sticky fingers. It's a great addition to the Tangie Berry but the TB overpowers any flavour. And at this early start point I sense the writing will get messy as I plough forwards. The effects of the orange hash and Tangie Berry bud mixture is making my face sweat.

The orange hash smells citrus fresh as you crumble it but smoking it on its own doesn't add much orange flavour to my party. However it's nicely strong and you feel much different after smoking it than you did before you started. It's a really clean smoke. I see most hash as a joint topper rather than it's own thing as I'm yet to find a hash that isn't better rolled with weed. Open to suggestions there.


Citrodelic Sunset:

Next up we have the Citrodelic Sunset bud. This is the second time I've had this and I already know I like it. It's got strong hints of the dank tang of sour orange I crave but mixed in with lighter citrus and fruity notes. It's more of a tease than full orangecore but it's a small taste of the past to help feed my memories. The stone profile too feels similar to old orange bud in that it's a heavy one with a delayed onset. I like this. I'll probably order it a third time.


Let's add wax:

The orange Creamsicle wax isn't the easiest to work into a joint as it suddenly shifts from solid to goo on your fingers but part of the joy of extracts is the challenge of rolling up without ending up with stickier hands than Spider-Man. Both the waxs have distinct citrus smells that's heavily overridden by the spirited smell of strong fresh resin.

For my first extract roller I've mixed orange Creamsicle wax with Citrodelic Sunset bud. Taste and effect are pretty close to perfection. Orange day was a good idea. You should do this folks if you aren't already. It's a pretty expensive idea at the rate I'm going but a good one nonetheless. I like it.


Triple orange mixture:

I've followed this up with a triple mix of Citrodelic Sunset, white nectarine wax and a layer of the orange static hash on top. The white nectarine seems easier to handle than the OC. I think I prefer it Now this is a flavour and stone mix that's giving a lot from each puff. If I won the lottery, this is how I'd roll. It's pressing a lot of my orange buttons all at once. I might have peaked too early and I'm glad I've nothing else to achieve today other than writing this post.


In pursuit of balance:

For the sake of balance, science and the community, I have now gone with a triple of the Tangie Berry, orange Creamsicle wax and orange hash. It's a really potent smoke but the orange of the Tangie Berry overrides the other flavours with its full Jaffa cake topping taste. Tastes aside this one is making my eyes feel seriously heavy and the screen I'm writing on look blurry. It hasn't helped my own balance but hopefully has added something to this topic.


Stoner perfection:

While these smokes were brief moments of wonderful stoner perfection, I don't think I quite found the flavour of the past. There have been hints of it with the Citrodelic Sunset but nostalgia is an elusive beast to bring back to life in full force. I'm in a new, orangey and happy place though. Let's face it, it'll actually be incomparable to the past bud as it's likely the bud I have is probably twice as strong in both potency and flavour - and it's weakest thing I'm adding to my smokes. The memory is over-kind to the past as it looks through orange-tinted glasses.

I'm enjoying each and every one of these smokes. Perhaps in years to come I'll be flavour chasing today's orange session. "Do you remember back in the day, the old LB orange...? "


I asked 3 questions earlier:

Will it be too much of a orange thing?
- No. You can't have too much orange much as I suspected. Orange is good. We like the orange.

Will it bring back a taste of the past?
- A few hints but not really - and that's okay.

Will I be too stoned to care?
- You got me there. Apparently so.


Flavour Chasing. The conclusion:

I'd definitely do this again. I don't usually put so much thought into my smoking and generally I don't keep a running diary as I go. So that was interesting for me to try to put into words how it was going. I'd happily have another orange day although I would likely do a blue or silver version next. Maybe a diesel day. I'm open to suggestions.

The problem:

Every time I roll on my tray then close my tin up a tiny bit of the leftover weed and tobacco ends up in the box. This really accumulates over time but is a dried mess of dusty tobacco & kief-ish stuff. Usually it reaches a point where I chuck it out. Sometimes I add it to a smoke. It's not pleasant although it's usually strong.

The theory:

So this time I've decided to apply science to it. Look away actual scientists.

I tested dry tobacco in water. It dissolves / floats. So I figured if I freeze my tray of leftovers, mix them with ice and water, hit it with a blender, filter all the big bits out then leave it to settle in a cold bottle with ice and occasional agitation, that the only stuff capable of sinking will be broken bits of trichome. Everything else would float or dissolve.

Solution in action:

It's been half an hour and it's working. It creates a really truly horrible smush of brown plant material to chuck out from the first filtering but I've got hash settling at the bottom of a bottle filled with what is -probably- toxic brown water.

* Don't try this at home folks *

If you do please acknowledge you're probably working with a poison. This is really a note to myself as I'm still mid-process while writing this. Perhaps one of the scientists I told to look away earlier but who kept on reading anyway could comment on how lethal the water would be. I still have to syphon it so I'll definitely need to take care with that.

I'm assuming the water uptake of the final hash will be so low that this isn't an issue. I'm going to give it one hour more then see what I've got. You don't have to wait an hour though. This is not a live show.

Generally the longer you leave it the more you get but I'm impatient and getting anything back will already be a better result than I expected when I started.

Hourish later:

We are ready to syphon this and filter the hash out. It looks like there is enough as a proof of concept. If you're reading this in my obituary instead of little biggy then you already know the outcome. Personally I'm feeling how I imagine Dr Frankenstein felt when his monster plans began to pan out. We are one spark away from perfection here. I'll be back. Hopefully. It went well for the Dr - right?

Syphoning:

Honestly, this is generally unpleasant when doing this even with fresh frozen plants but this was new level unpleasant. Really like kissing an ashtray. If you're thinking of quitting smoking tobacco, making some of this would be a good start. Tobacco - it's repulsive stuff. Anyway, off for a smoke then I'll be back.

Filtering:

Final filter done and I have a small amount of hash of an unknown grade. Those doubting this at the beginning, you may eat your hats now. This actually includes me. I hadn't thought this through. Still my hat will not taste as bad as syphoning tobacco water. Mmmmm.... Chewy cotton & cardboard.....

The hash needs to be dried. A good hash would be well dried and cured for a length of time. That's clearly not going to happen here. As soon as it's smokable I'll smoke some to see what it's made from.

I started with 6.2g of a skanky dried mixture of old weed bits and tobacco and I've got 0.6g of hash back. What are you betting on? Good hash? Bad hash? Poison hash? Not poison but tastes like poison hash? I'm actually betting on smokable hash at this point. I don't want to have to eat two hats.

The final product:

This is it. This is happening. The cumulation of a stupid idea I had late at night when I was a wee bit stoned is at its moment of completion. I'm going in.

I've speed dried this so I might update this post once I've tried the bit ill leave to cure.

It definitely tastes horribly tobaccoey. First taste is not a positive. Nor the second. This is a bad hash based on flavour. Really bad. The smell of it burning does smell like hash. The smoke's quite thick and it leaves white ash behind. It's also got some stone. Probably around the strength of a $30 3.5g hash on lb. Except this tastes more like an ashtray. It's really bad. However bad you're thinking - it's actually worse than that. I'm currently filled with regret for starting this at all.

Any hash flavouring, and I doubt there is any, has been washed away with tobacco flavour. And not a nice tobacco flavour like when a smoker sparks up a cigarette straight off a long haul flight and has that first puff. This is a dirty ashtray taste. It's really bad. It tastes like I'm the second or third person to have smoked it. I roll with some tobacco; I enjoy tobacco - in moderation, but this is really f**kin' awful. You could lick a pub ashtray clean from the Red Lion in the 1980s and still not taste more of a used tobacco taste. You could have a more pleasurable smoke by rolling up some fallen autumn leaves into a bus ticket.

My thinking was that the hash itself is waterproof so once it's back out the water any nasty taste would go with the water. This is so far from true. Even my dinner tastes bad now. I smoked this ages ago. All I can taste is ashtrays. I keep thinking the taste has gone while I'm eating but soon as I stop it's back like I'm still smoking it. It is genuinely ruining my evening.

Conclusion:

I was really fully ready for a smug ending to this post. I guess, arguably the science worked. I did create a hash from waste tobacco and weed. And it will get you stoned if you can bear smoking it. Earlier I wrote I'll try it once it's cured but honestly I don't think I will. It's genuinely that bad and I hadn't lived with it long enough when I made that declaration. I'm not standing by it. I wish the taste of good hash lingered like this. I guess the only positive I can draw from this experience is a greater understanding of how much flavour a bubble hash must accumulate during processing.

So there you have it. In answer to my initial question - yes, you can make bubble from a tobacco / weed mix but still don't. I'd rather eat two, three or more hats than have to smoke any more of this crap. If this is how smoking tasted, none of us would smoke.

I hope some of you found this informative, if not I hope it was entertaining at least. I'll see you in the next topic. I'm off for some extreme teeth cleaning and then smoking whatever the strongest tasting thing there is in my box in the desperate hope I may taste something else other than ashtrays. I'm thinking of going all in on an orange session after payday. I've long since been a fan of orange strains. Seemingly not for everyone but for me both the taste and effect of a decent bit of orange is hard to beat. The dank deep citrus musk taste of a nice orange bud followed by the delivery of a powerful sedative hit delayed by just enough time to lull you into a false sense of security before it leaps onto you from behind is my favourite kind of smoking experience.

As it's possible to get orange everything here, it feels a good idea to combine it all into a super orange session and see how that goes.

I read someone else's post a while back which I'd link if I could find it. They had an orange evening and I always did like the sound of it.

Can you have too much orange in one session?

Because the idea of rolling orange buds with orange hash on top of orange extracts seems the most marvelous idea ever to me.

A mixture of some of these I guess will be the way forward. What would you choose?

Is this a me thing? I've had a couple of vendors tightly vacuum pack buds. I fully get the need for stealth and have been impressed by the variety of solutions to this. Probably best not to discuss that too deeply online I guess.

It seems to me that the buds don't quite recover until they've had a day in a small jar. Like, straight out the vacuum pack there's much less smell & flavour than develops over the next day or so. Like it's been suffocated and can breathe again.

Is it a known thing? Or like many things, just in my mind?

Dearly beloved we are gathered here today to worship hash mastery at its finest. There is Spanish Piatella hash available on LB (linked).

Look at the divine fudgy goodness & rich fawny colouring. Just looking at it, every cell in my body yearns to have its stoney and spiritual wonders racing around inside and filling all my senses with joy. Will it submerge my brain with the bliss it looks to my eyes?

Someone has put an awful lot of time and care into an artisan process to produce this stuff. And it's a long haul process from what I've read with a number of key stages that really need to go right.

It's hard for me to justify the spend on this at five times the cost of the best hash I've ever had, I have to admit. Literally I have to admit it before I spend what I can't afford. Don't do that folks. If I was a rock star or had more disposable income I'd be all over it though. Unless my lottery ticket is luckier than it usually is there'll not be a new BigRoo review incoming for this.

Please can one of the LB high rollers out there buy some - take the pilgrimage on behalf of us all - and write an in depth review so I (we) may live vicariously through your thoughts, words & feelings. Thank you.

I've made bubble hash several times in the past, usually from (other people's) trim or failed crops and just using stuff I have at home or could buy for pennies online. Fresh frozen has given me my best results - and some of them have been startlingly good.

As there's all sorts of shake & trim on lb I've been thinking about doing a run of hash.
