In short, yes! 60's, 70's and even through to the 90's we dominated and now...it's pretty much garbage, don't even listen to the radio anymore!
Culture is too atomised due to the internet, and the arts in general are increasingly more like a status game for the rich than in the 60s-90s: there are few financial incentives to be a good musician anymore and only the very biggest, well connected, and commercially safest acts can now make a living from music. Plus all the stuff in the vid cloudeater posted.
Shouldn’t need a financial incentive to be good. Not in any hobby. Your either good or your not. This is Gained by natural skills or just brute force hard work. Although that barely matters these days as per the headline of this topic rightly suggesting a low. It’s a yo yo. Electronic / new age is the current theme with low quality and high output. It will go back to guitar rock as soon as the uni students decide that is more cool
Agree if it's just a hobby. If you are going to be a professional musician full time, and are not independently wealthy already, you eventually need to make some kind of a living and pay the rent. And you probably won't get pro-level skills at an instrument/performing/production without being able to put a ton of time into it.
The only solid revenue for musicians these days is touring and merchandise. The income from single & album sales is much lower than it was thanks to mp3 & streaming platforms

Remember seeing them a couple of times, also at Glastonbury (and maybe Reading 92?). The song I liked most by them was a cover of Public Enemy's '(She Watch) Channel Zero' if memory serves. Think I got a free 7" copy as it was given out at one of the gigs.
Could it have been Reading '94? There was a metal/rap crossover thing going on back then. I used to like messing with people on the street by cranking it up in the car stereo. "What was that? Sounds like that rapping tripe but also that head banging nonsense? I say..."

Yeah, I actually found a gig flyer from 94 buried in my ‘man’ drawer and the last day lists Soundgarden and Special Guests. After the festival I crossed out Soundgarden (didn’t turn up) and put Therapy? in place. I also ticked the bands I could ‘remember’ seeing (Lemonheads has ‘bit’ next to it, actually over exaggerated as can’t recall who, what or how they sound!)

Sorry, never saw this! I must be wrong as I only went to Reading in 92, mainly to see Public Enemy and Nirvana. Never really considered it a "festival", more of a 3 day gig. Must have been Glasto then as I went every year it was on from '85 to '96 when I decided it was no longer a fabulous freak show that they were trying to shut down every year and instead had become an "event" on the social calendar for the middle classes desperately pretending to be bohemians for a weekend and bookable only by credit card. Used to be that the police weren't even allowed on site and they buzzed us with helicopters! Changed days indeed.
Next week on "old man shouts at clouds" listen whilst old punks decry the death of "real music" and call for the death penalty for producers and artists who use auto-tune in every single feckin' one of their 'music as painting-by-number' songs...

Ha! There was lots of stuff like this around in the early/mid nineties and beyond. Tons of great tunes in all sorts of genres fusing, boppin' and giving your noggin' a floggin'. Here's a couple more for you but there are so so many to choose from. Nothin' new under the sun children ;-)

Rap-rock was definitely enough of a thing to get named as such in Guitar Player magazine back then.
The Judgement Night oundtrack was mentionned on LB lately but one of my fave was the Dutch band Urban Dance Squad. Also Rollins Band Weight is a classic as well as ICe T's Bodycount plus a few obscure one like this one:

At the drive are my fave ultra loud band, saw Mars Volta twice in Portsmouth, wow brutal gig.
I would love to have seen Mars Volta.. Seen At The Drive in a couple of times. Once at Reading festival a long time ago (think I saw Sparta there aswell), and caught them at Cochella around 2012. Still, loud, mental and awesome.

So many good bands on this link, I loved some of the early Monster Magnet and of course Black Sabbath are great. If you haven't heard of Elder they are good. As they've progressed they've really got some mellow flows.
Also, listen to Chowder - Passion Rift album...can't find much on youtube but it's worth getting.

Secondly i'd say the rosin is amazing, so good but the main problem with that joint would be getting it involved, even out of the fridge its tricky to work with, I have mine squeezed flat between some parchment paper and in the freezer so I can chunk off little bits easier, still have to work quick though and still find myself wanting a hot drop tool for it, maybe rolling the rosin in some flower and then into worms would work for joints and bowls🤷🏻♂️

Protest the Hero + Show Me the Body are two bands that spring to mind. These are certainly not protest artists sonically, as they are both heavier guitar bands, but are both aggressively anti-establishment, discussing topics you won’t hear other artists sing about.

There is an instrumental version I like a lot because of Grant Green playing a beautiful guitar solo (on the album "All The Gin IS Gone" by Jimmy Forrest).

I have a few Jazz Standards which I like (and play as a dabbling Jazz guitar player) but they are the usual array: Stella by Starlight, You Go to My Head, Foggy Day In London, How High The Moon and so on but it really depends on the artist.

Case by case basis really. Seen Blur at Wembley recently and they were great. Sometimes it's better though to let things be. Stone Roses also good although those 2 new tracks were bad. Good idea to have not bothered with an album.

I am a 80/90s hip hop fan, for a long time hip hop in my eyes has been dead, there have been the few sparks here and there over the past 20 years and the likes of KRS 1, Paris, Dead Prez, Guru (RIP), Public Enemy, Jeru etc. have kept it real with the message and essence of what hip hop represented in its prime, highlighting the race and wealth inequality in society and acting as a "Black CNN" talking directly to the people.
In the 80s and 90's the message was Fight the Power, and that's where I feel we have come full circle.

The calls for equality in a deeply polarised society couldn't be heard louder, on the right, division, hatred and the slow creep of fascism, not just in America but here in the UK and across Europe.
As George Carlin mentioned, America has owners, "huge corporations who control the media and the politicians, they own everything" its true and that's why the message is controlled to support the status quo, this is the end game of Capitalism.
Hip hop and graffiti art speaks for the people, some of the last vestiges of independent expression, hip hop can be fun and silly, I love loads of hip hop, Redman, Raekwon and Daz Dillinger are some of my all time favourites but deep down it represents a movement for change.

Can't fault high focus. I use to listen to Skinnyman but he started sharing some crazy things without fact checking so left him alone. If you like Skimmyman look at Braintax, not about anymore as he did a runner with everyone's money but still some good bars

Yeah there has been a lot of that going round lately. People seem to be caught up in the hype of everything and don't bother checking what they are told and just take it as facts.
I actually saw skinnyman and fliptrix doing a set together last last year and they were both amazing live...fliptrix has such a stage presence when he performs.

Wu Tang Clan - Enter the Wu Tang (managed to see them in NYC for Rock The Bells 2010 performing the whole album was a dream comes true) and the second best album for me would be Gang Starr - Moment of Truth
finally someone said Blue Lines. It's odd because in a lot of ways musically I don't rate it highly, it's kind of clumsy in parts, some of the ideas are underdeveloped, some of it almost makes me cringe. But there was just something so special about that time and the sound felt so new and yet familiar. Even though their later stuff is "better" Blue Lines has such a permananet special place in my heart.

Never heard of either band before this shout. I listened to Epic Garden Music this morning on a hike and it's fantastic love the use of the keyboard and you can really hear early elements of shoegaze taking shape on tracks like "Lope" and "ART".. This is a very good band crisp.. Try listening to Soul Mining and Dusk by The The and tell me what you think. Anyway stay cool compadre.

For around 10 years i was playing, mostly dylan, (and neil young, simon and garfunkel etc.)very dedicated i was too!😊
His voice is so expressive i think that's lost on a lot of folks.
I found his bootlegs when i went to london and worked in my early 20s, in Camden market, they were playing one of the bootlegs at the time and i felt like i'd found music heaven.

Only legendary artist I've walked away from when they were performing. Super pretentious at Glastonbury refusing any screens for his performance in the late '90s. Dreadful acoustics (only worse at Glastonbury was Orbital, and that was sad as I was looking forward to them so much). We went to get food instead and left Bob singing badly out of tune. Vastly overrated performer, outstanding songwriter.
I seen him in Wembley and central Scotland, both outstanding and i got the bootlegs from both.
Well we can only speak as we find. One of the very best gigs I ever saw was Arthur Lee and Love playing not long before he succumbed to leukaemia. Outstanding acoustics and a performance so good you'd think it was recorded: Shazam showed otherwise.

I've been off around 9-10 days now and looking at another 2 weeks.
Easy peasy, it gets easier and easier each time you get off it believe me.
I suffer no real sweats now and can sleep no problem and feel pretty good too.
This time has been the easiest yet just keep yourself busy and try focusing on others, use the time to get things done.
Getting up early helps too, catch the morning sun.👍
Music is a great healer and this ones for you my friends and when we get back we ain't gonna need $40 a gram hash to get high, all we're gonna need is a puff or two of some regular and if you do choose the extortionate stuff on your return be careful!😁
I'll probably go with some $23 a gram iso hash and end up on the floor after a single skinner.
Could buy myself a g or two now but no point really especially Christmas coming up.
Be well out there and enjoy the real dopamine God gave us to get by with in this nasty cruel world we live in now.

Weed with extracts is always a good idea but mixing in sticky concentrates to make a ‘Roulade’ (my take!) is a bloody great one!
The ‘Dream Wedding’ Roulade:
Ingredients:
Wedding Cake by Druids Magic
Blue Dream Caviar from Canadian Imports
Method:
Grind weed and use a dab tool to spoon caviar on top. Use fingers to work into the weed until covered (weed will prevent fingers getting too sticky), and compress into a cake (roulade!)
Load roulade into a dosing capsule and bake @ 195c for 2+2 minutes.
Inhale deeply and say “I DO!”
Terp Bomb!
Big hitting rolling euphoria will ensue heading moonwards and the most tremendous sense of well being…just fabulous..
A match made in heaven..

music is more powerful than any drug in my opinion and its easier than ever to share. the best kind of songs are the ones that make you feel something and no matter how much time passes they can still be appreciated no matter who you are. my life wouldn't be the same without music very grateful for the people who make this stuff. respect 👊

It is SO wonderful how easy it is to share music now, but I do sometimes feel a twinge of longing/ nostalgia for the days of the mix tape. Having a tactile representation of a friend's care. Knowing they've taken the time to gift you with tunes, that they've clunkily stopped and rewound and recorded. The excitement of playing them to death. Just the most wonderful thing to receive.

Hey guys hope you’re all having a cool weekend. Just wondering are there Any metalheads on LB? I love most metal but my fave genres are probably blackgaze and post black metal. I really like Alcest and Panopticon I’d say they’re the bands I’m listening to the most right now. I remember people telling me when I was a teenager I’d grow out of metal,well I’m in my 40s now and still listening just as much if not more. It really is a way of life. Love and peace.
The 90s had such amazing metal bands. So many genres were exploding and were so exciting. Wasn’t so keen on that rap metal mind. I loved RATM but the ones that followed like Limp Bizkit were pretty dumb.

Oh sorry man I thought you meant I was preaching to you. Yeah I loved the first Korn album hated the 2nd but loved the 3rd album. Stopped following them after that but still like the odd track after the 3rd album. Alone I break is an awesome track.
I remember seeing Pantera at the Ozzfest back in 98. Amazing set and a wild pit not as crazy as the Soulfly pit a set later that was insane. Love early Deftones up to the White Pony album.

Celtic Frost are probably my fave out of the 1st wave black metal bands. Did you not get on with the 2nd wave of black metal? There are some great bands.
No I do just lower down on my list. Celtic frost absolutely genius band although there was a time they were called death metal
Early Dimmu Borgir for me mate. First 2 albums are great(even the ripped off track on the 2nd album) went off them when they expanded their sound.
sorgens is one of my fave tracks pity m8 i love most of their stuff although my fave albums are Puritanical and In sorte. stormblast will always hold a special place in my heart..
Of course Screamo counts man! Love myself a bit of Mice&Men and Bring Me The Horizon. Not sure if they’re Screamo bands?
I'm mid-forties now and grew up on bands like Metallica, Pantera, Machine Head and NIN. I've always been into other stuff as well but it's what I mostly listened to during my teens and twenties.
I don't listen to metal as much as I used to however I've found the old adage that your tastes mellow with age to be untrue in my case. I listen to some much heavier, more extreme bands than I used to and I'm much more open to sub genres I wouldn't have considered before.
My current favourite heavy listen is Lullabies for Eternal Sleep by Apes. Hadn't heard of them until I read a brief review that described that EP as being sort of like post-metal if all the quiet bits were replaced with nasty grindcore. One listen and I'd bought the tracks off Bandcamp. The first track, Cornwall, is savage but has such an amazing groove too.
If you like blackened stuff then check out Apes' earlier album, Lightless. Different to the latest material but still bloody good.

I go a lot of gigs and download/bloodstock festival. Some of the best music to have a smoke to.
Yeah probably the most community, friendly festival I’ve been to. Really chilled and there’s not too many people like major festivals.
lots of metal plays at the local gym, Sepultura, Nailbomb, SOAD, Pantera, Mastodon, Deftones, DOWN, Black Label Society, TOOL and some others I cant remember the name of
Seeing Municipal Waste again in October, really looking forward to that one

Tonight I've been listening to Cult of Luna and Boris. Last night it was Lamp of Murmuur and Fluisteraars. I'm in my 50s. Metal seems to make more sense the older I get but then the type of metal I listen to now is different from the metal I listened to at 16. Except for Sabbath. Always Sabbath 🤘Music just keeps on getting better.
Absolutely love Cult Of Luna their Salvation album was incredible! Can’t remember if it was their debut? Give Panoption a listen man especially there again into the light album it is pure genius. Austin Lunn plays over a dozen instruments on the album. Can’t wait to see them next month on their first ever UK tour. Always Iron Maiden for me mate though I do obviously love Sabbath.
Oh yeah I love Panopticon too. I was listening to And Again... last night. Also Botanist and Wolves In The Throne Room, sheer sheets of metallic sound, hypnotic riffs it's damn psychedelic as a genre in many ways. Also into stuff like Thou and Primitive Man, I was listening to the last Wormrot album the other day. There's just so much good stuff and such massive variety that it's impossible to not like something that's "metal" if you're into music. If anyone avoids metal they should take a deep dive into all the sub genres cos they'd be surprised at how much they would probably love. From Sunn O))) to Full of Hell and all the stops in between.
They’re ..again into the light album is so good. I found it very accessible compared to their earlier stuff. Still really enjoy their early folk metal inspired stuff. Kentucky is fantastic. I was lucky enough to see Wolves In The Throne Room a few years back. Beautiful gig. It was bombastic and majestic all at once. 🤘
I saw Panopticon a few years back over in Dutchie land, enjoyed them but haven't paid much attention to them since.Do you like Wayfarer? They do a similar type of thing kinda country tinged BM.
Really like Wayfarer too and a Scottish band called Saor. They play a similar style to Panopticon. Can’t wait to see them live,I’ve waited years for them to visit the UK. Gotta travel a few hundred miles but it will deffo be worth it. Much love.

Yeah Sabbath are definitely the godfathers of metal. Without them half the genres today wouldn’t exist.
and if you into black metal check out Blackbraid they just relesed their second album its Native american black metal if you like melodic stuff check em out i feel they are only going to get better...

sometimes i like to just pop on an album that takes me to another world. two most recent arctic monkeys albums are great for it, i feel like i'm floating through the galaxy whenever i listen to
DJ Shadow’s Endtroducing for me. One of the few multi format albums I own that I’ve had to replace several times cos I’ve worn it out. Freaks me out that it’s nearly 30 years old, it blew my mind then and it still does now. A masterpiece of a sonic journey.
I drove 400 miles to see him DJ. Got realy high then kinda drive home 400 miles. The good old days of 1996.
I second both of these choices. I came here to say the 2nd as clearly the thread title leads anyone who knows the album to think of it. Saw them play it live about 20 years ago, and they were superb.
I third them both amazing albums, I will add any ozric tentacles early albums, cinematic orchestra ,
At one point Spiritualized were my most seen band. Overtaken by Morcheeba by the end of the 90s (i used to go on tour with them tho). Smoke Fairies are up there now too.

The original Dreamfish album was amazing back in the day. I remember getting a cassette tape copy from a guy at school and listening to it on headphones after a spliff which blew my mind. Got the CD off eBay years later and it's still good for an ambient chillout option.
I’ve got the vinyl of that! Quality Fax output. That label did loads of amazing CDs and they were all limited to between 200-500 copies only….
Sweet, I'll need to check my copy then. I might have bagged a rarity if it's the same label! 😂
I had quite a few but sold on sone years back highest I got was £300 for the second I.F. CD!

Tom Waits. My all time favourite artist. Been putting stuff out for 50 years and never made a dud album IMO. And none of them sound dated.
Queen and Freddie Mercury...you only have to look at the age range and diversity of the fanbase.

I adore this album. I wanted a copy on vinyl years ago and my mate's dad sold stuff on eBay and had it, apparently! I went to his house and he had about 10 copies, and I took the best. Can't remember what I paid, but around £10 would have been reasonable.

Simon's song writing and singing on this album is just amazing, so subtle, a true master at work.👍❤️

I always enjoy telling them that i saw Dave Grohl drumming for Scream before he joined Nirvana.
Rock music is still alive and well, its just not as popular as it used to be. It isnt dangerous and exciting to young people any more, rap/hiphop has taken its place in that regard...
It sucks Greta Van Fleet are the only example being brought up here though, to me they are highly derivative and not really doing anything new.... It sucks Greta Van Fleet are the only example being brought up here though, to me they are highly derivative and not really doing anything new.... Steve Wilson is a fantastically talented musician, however he's also a mahoosive elitest plonker who for a very long time wouldn't release music on streaming services due to it being "digital" and lower quality and therefore not the experience he wanted for his listener base. He has since changed his stance on this but it along with some really awful interviews he did make me unable to listen to his music (knowingly)

Rival Sons are worth a listen if you’re looking for old school retro/Zep type sounds with their own twist. The singer Jay has an immense voice

You are one "L" away from the same name as a southern rock band! Rock seemed to eat its babies over the last decade or two. Too many old rockers raging at the dying of the light while clutching a new remaster of Physical Graffiti and demanding to know why there is no good new music anymore (there was, you didnt support it).

Doubt many have heard this, but basically the story behind this song and others in the album is that someone somehow ended up in a parallel universe where either the beetles never broke up or ended up getting back together & never died. Which led to the creation of this so called album and a few others. Some guy stole this album which was on a cassette tape and some how managed to bring it to our universe, I can’t fully remember the story but it’s on the internet somewhere with a full web site explaining the story, I’ll link it for anyone whose interested

It's been seven hours
I was obsessed with Prince when I was in my early teens. Had every album on vinyl and cassette tape, all the picture disks, plus the CDs when they came out. Even had a leather jacket with the symbol on the back.🤣
Interestingly, Sinead O'Connor didn't get along with Prince at all, but she had such an incredible voice and did such a fantastic video of the song, he still allowed her rendition to be released.
I think people often forget how many songs Prince wrote for other artists. He was an absolute musical genius, the kind of which I doubt we will see again anytime soon.
If anyone wants to know just how talented he was, listen to the incredible 1987 release; 'Sign o' the Times'. The vast majority of the instruments on the entire album were played by Prince himself, alongside the new (at the time) LM-1 drum machine.
Anyway, I'm getting nerdy now but yeah, an absolute hero of mine... and a musical legend.

The Prince version is so good. Saw him live in the O2 years ago and I don't think I've seen a better show, and we saw Sonic Youth play Daydream Nation in its entirety at The Roundhouse that week too. My sound engineer mate was working the gig and he got me and 2 mates into the aftershow party too, using a swapped ID badge with another sound engineer that presumably has higher access. Security were still complete dicks, but we got in!
I also have many of his albums on LP, and most on CD. An unbelievable talent. I only found out after his death that he wrote Manic Monday as he fancied Susanna Hoffs so much. It's so obviously a Prince song when you listen to it knowing that, and I really don't know how I ever missed it.

Tough one that. Vince Clarke era Depeche were arguably the best.
Pure electronic pop music and Vince cemented that with the fantastic Yazoo.
New order are really more of a British institution as later Depeche went full on American rock gods cliche, and not really my thing.
Born out of Joy Division ultimately New Order’s path was foisted upon them by the untimely tragedy of Ian Curtis but they rose to the occasion and still put out the occasionally brilliant record (last one for me was ‘shifty’) and have a back catalogue of strong albums with ‘Technique’ ‘Power Corruption and Lies’ being my favourites.

Another vote for New Order. I have the legendarily runious pressing of Blue Monday (FAC 73) on vinyl in excellent condition. Got to love a band who have a song that enables them to get out of the venue before the end of it at their shows.

Artctic Monkeys seem to be getting flak for a sub-standard set at Glastonbury last night. Am I missing something? I thought they were banging. A proper tight performance in my opinion, whether you like them or not.
I thought Alex Turner's vocals were a bit off, I think he has been ill though. Don't think the set was anywhere near as bad as some of the critics have suggested.
Considering Alex has just had acute laryngitis I thought he did well. I think some folk are just upset that they're maturing/evolving as a band.

I love De La Soul and have most of their OG albums on wax, only one I’m missing is ‘De La Soul Is Dead’ sadly Dave/Plug Two recently passed away so raise a glass to one of the finest rap crews to ever do it.
They were part of the native tongues movement which included the also amazing Jungle Brothers, Tribe Called Quest, Black Sheep, Monie Love, Queen Latifah, Red Alert, KMD, Leaders Of The New School amongst others. These guys changed the course of Hip Hop from misogynistic and violent lyrics and imagery to something more soulful and powerful, and arguably great music to smoke to.

Saw out the late 90's bouncing from club to club with a house, hard house, trance & techno soundtrack to my life (which only ended in the past decade or so 😀)

Mate, this reads like I wrote it! I’m was (and still am!) a huge Carter fan! Proper tuned me in to the world, their lyrics still stand strong now. Got me socially aware and into hip hop, then I got into the tail end of the rave/club scene. Onto trip hop,and the 00’s indie scene a bit. Listen to mostly 90s hip hop and industrial stuff now!

But back to the 90's.
Must have been summer 92 that I went to my first rave. I live in NI so we those that are fimilar with things will remember Kellys in Portrush. Spent many saturday nights dancing to some amazing house music. Some epic tunes by artists who'se names I never did get, to loved up to care! As long as there was a big beat, piano break, hands in the air we didn't care. #goodtimes

I grew up in the '90s and it was the age when I really discovered music. I still listen to a ton of '90s music. I think for me hip hop peaked in the '90s - Enter the Wu Tang, The Chronic, Illmatic, Ready to Die...I could go on.

Love this one. Been in rotation for years. Not all the colabs work now but there's some bangers on there. The Teenage Fanclub & De La Soul joint is a great addition to any stoner playlist.

The soundtrack from Performance made in 1970 is great. Lots of music by Ry Cooder. It involves a lot of pot smoking and a mushroom trip too. Cult movie.

An album which seems to have almost been forgotten but which was once almost ubiquitous at the after club smoke and come down. Ladies, gentlemen and other pronouns, may I invite you to sit back, enjoy and Chill Out...
One of the best chill out/ambient albums of all time. Also the KLF made ‘Space’ which is another ambient lp based around….the theme of space.
I’ve got both of them on OG vinyl. And if you like those then the Orb’s first release ‘a huge ever growing brain that rules from the centre of the ultraverse’ is in a very similar vein considering they all knew each other and worked together on different projects. There’s also the FFWD album which is Fripp, the Orb and Thomas Fehlman, that album is also along the lines of the above. Lastly the KLF ‘last train to trancentral’ remix twelve had a longer segment from ‘chill out’ that wasn’t on the original record, and same goes for ‘3am eternal’ which had a remix twelve with another ‘chill out’ outtake remix. Welcome to the rabbit hole :)………..

Used to have both on vinyl too back in the day, along with stuff from the eighties like Whitney Joins the Jamms etc which I sold when I needed the readies :-) Also was an 'early-adoptor' of the Orb, seeing them on their first UK tour when their backdrop was a sheet with Orb written on it. Lots of stuff on EG Editions which predated the 90s ambient dance is worth listening to. Eno, Penguin Cafe Orchestra etc. and nowadays there is almost too much choice!
EG was Eno’s label Alex Patterson was a talent scout for them before the Orb and a roadie for killing joke prior to that.
Plenty of great ambient and classical/minimal stuff on EG for sure. ‘The Pearl’ by Harold Budd and Eno being one of my faves.

Its obscurity can be partially explained by their decision to delete their entire back catalogue when they split up. Probably wise, due to the amount of uncleared samples / interpolations going on with some of those tunes.
Still sounds magical to these ears, and so much better than the official "cleared" versions on Spotify etc.

As I understand it they really regretted it later :-) There is a movie about it and, I think, a book.
😀 I met Jimmy Cauty but not Bill Drummond decades ago when they were just going big it was around the time of the ‘chill out’ album.
Neither were into drugs at all surprisingly!
Jimmy now runs the K2 foundation and still makes loads of art which he flogs online.
Both of em are as antiestablishment as you like and used to just do things on ‘gut instinct’ and then think about it afterwards 😮

This is one I still listen to quite frequently. Discovered mid nineties along with the orb and FSOL. I still don't know the individual tracks, it is to be enjoyed in full in one sitting, just tooting away I reckon. :)

I just knew you would mention this !! There is also an Alex Paterson version out there with the Jimmy Cauty parts removed which makes it more ambient by the simple fact of having silent parts! There was also a huge limited remix of the KLF catalogue including Space (hour plus if I remember) a few years ago. This Is Not The KLF - I believe it was called. Martin somebody?

Speaking to an old friend from days long gone and he told me his favourite memories from back in the early 90s was after clubs heading back to mine and I'd put Screamadelica on repeat while everyone chilled out and came down passing 'round the spliffs. Related this to a younger colleague and they had never listened to it! So, just in case there are any others who are unfamiliar with this masterpiece I thought I'd post a link to it so they can discover this album which, it so happens, is about to celebrate its 30th birthday on September 23!!!
edit: Unfortunately the full album doesn't play from the link so I'd recommend playing it in full on YT or Spotify etc. You REALLY need to play it all the way through, trust me!

Big part of that album was Andy Weatherall god rest his soul. If it weren’t for him and his production they’d still be doing Byrds impersonations (not that there’s anything wrong with that)
It was perfect symmetry at that time and resulted in a groundbreaking record.
Oddly enough it wasn’t one of those albums we used to toke to very much, there were loads of far more ‘expansive’ records for those listening occasions one of which was the Orb’s ‘Blue Room’ track in its 45 minute entirety… Still got my primals original bus stop poster for the album and the original double vinyl both of which must be worth a few Bob now…..

Yeh, Weatherall is the key to Screamadelica. Bobby didn't even get what he was doing at first, he wanted to sound like the Stones and Pretty Things still :-) As you say, nothing wrong with that but... He made the same error with the follow up, a huge disappointment as released, despite the initial recordings with Tom Dowd at Argent being so much better. A fact proved when 'The Original Memphis Recordings' was later released to much acclaim. Went to a couple of PS all nighters at Brixton Academy back then, fun times! Would love that poster.
Seen them live meany a time. A good few they were shite due to the fact Bobby Gillespie and mani were out there tits lol 😂 but what an album.

Top album! I saw them last summer where they played it in it's entirety, was one the best gigs I've been to in a long time.
Yep spent many nights after being out raving/ clubbing smoking the spliff and listening to this in the background while some dodgy re-run of prisoner cell block h was running on the tv with sound turned down, spacing out on the come down….

I saw NIN when they supported David Bowie at the SkyDome in Toronto…when they finished and Bowie came on half the audience left which was proof of who they had really come to see 😂😂

I didn't even know they were playing! Seen NIN many times and always good... Even if the venue is pants (I'm talking about the millennium dome or whatever it's called now). Pretty jealous, be a great place to see them.

Ah no wonder I didn't hear... Pretty out of the loop with gigs these days anyway. Doesn't stop me from being jealous though! What was the set like? When I've seen them, usually a good mix of new and old. Seen them at Brixton academy a few times... Venue suits them very well.

Takes me back to the early 90's......that and Moon Safari by Air stand out for me. I listened to Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld by the Orb a lot back then too. I still roll this one out - another great toking album.
My guitar teacher switched me on to these guys way back. Nowadays, I appreciate this much more than I did then!
Lucky enough to see Ozrics at several free festivals in late eighties and nineties, once so caned on micro dots I thought I was watching floyd from the meddle era.

My go to is Pink Floyd ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’, followed by Dave Matthews ‘Before These Crowded Streets’ or ‘Under the Table and Dreaming’ and First Aid Kit ‘Ruins’
Its a personal choice and each to their own taste however if there is a list of great albums to listen to when stoned then Fleetwood Mac - Rumours has to be on it.If you have never heard it then you are missing out on one of the greatest albums ever made.
Rumours takes on a totally new life when stoned. I wish I had the songwriting gene!
+1 for Rumours - there is a great documentary about the making of it...well, about the whole band, how they formed etc. They were basically hating each other when that album was made (which is obvious when you listen to the lyrics). Have a look for it on the iPlayer - well worth a look

From avenged sevenfold through to chopin and everything in between. This is really awesome to listen to. If you want a nice hour musical journey one of the best albums I could listen to from start to finish is Smashing Pumpkins, Siamese Dream, and it's not traditionally my fav music. Or anything Led Zep.

Had a near 50 year music obsession, and as well as an addiction to Reggae (roots/dub) I love a bit of Pink Floyd too.

Julian Cope highly rates this album, Nihojin by Far Out. It’s every bit as good as Meddle, especially as most of the musicians were street artists living in a commune.

As you can tell by my avatar I’m a massive Syd fan. All things Syd is my bag.
And being an old guy I have
a lot of the original vinyl, I’m also a second hand record dealer so I’ve picked up a nice collection over 40 years :)
I have most of the Floyd’s post Syd stuff but will always one back to those first two or three albums as they’re in a different league as are the early singles (apples and oranges, scream thy last scream, point me at the sky etc)
And Julian Cope is another subject entirely, author musician poet arch drude….the guy has it all and is a huge influence….
His biography ‘head on’ is an essential read as is his ‘modern antiquarian’ and ‘krautrock sampler’
For me his ‘fried’ and ‘Peggy suicide’ albums are next level. His wife Dorian is also extremely knowledgable about a raft of subjects. I find em both fascinating and endless sources of information. Huzzah! :)

You’re right! I don’t think Syd knew what he was playing, he just did it instinctively hence not many other players have his unique style which is part rhythm part lead and part background weirdness 😄 the guy was a genius and I know that word is bandied about regularly but in Syd’s case it was true. The fact it still sounds weird and yet familiar some 50 years on is astounding.

Often he would play lead off the chords shapes like in Astronomy Domine but other times you can really hear the influence of LSD on his style.
I've heard them cover songs like Louie Louie on bootlegs and I guess there was a skiffle/RnB influence on his playing like most other Brits at the time.
But man whatever influences he had they were warped and twisted beyond recognition.

Hehe…I love his music….the Pros & Cons is probably my favourite album of all time…but based on the Floyd books I’ve read everybody who’s ever worked with him thinks he’s a complete twat😂

Ooof! The velvets for sure are another one of my faves. Right up to ‘loaded’ they pretty much created ‘art rock’ out of psychedelia. No mean feat.
Yeah, that era was amazing and there are sooooo many great bands both obscure and well known that made classic records like the Pretty Things SF Sorrow, The Byrds younger than yesterday , Caravan’s first album, Kevin Ayers - joy of a toy, the Beach Boys - pet sounds, Kaleidoscope’s tangerine dream, Billy Nichols - would you believe, Small Faces - ogdens nut gone flake, the Kinks - something else, the Zombies - Odyssey and oracle….this is just a fraction of some of the fantastic albums of that period.
Mind you, there’s great music in all eras it’s digging for it that makes things rewarding. I love anything from this stuff to U.K. Garage from the 90s to US/U.K. hip hop from that decade to 90s drum and bass, House, Reggae, Soul, Funk, Disco, Library music, Easy listening/Lounge, Jazz, punk, new wave stuff like XTC, the Slits, electronic pop like early human league, soft cell, Scritti Politti, YMO, Yello, Prefab Sprout, Fad Gadget, early Depeche, Yazoo etc soundtracks, Indie stuff like Felt, Cocteaus, Pale Saints, early Verve, My Bloody Valentine, Spacemen 3, loads of Creation stuff, Rough trade and the Smiths, also dig a bit of classical, electronic experimental stuff, ambient, downtempo….pretty much most things.
There is so much good music out there it’s insane in a good way :)

Just heard he died a few days ago and saddened to hear of his passing. Much respect to him for his great work with the original incarnation of Hawkwind and his tireless work ethic afterwards. Highly eccentric and a bit ornery, but nobody can deny his essential role in the evolution of space rock.

I saw Nik play with various bands over the years. He was a true hero of the counterculture. Sad news.
The story I heard they asked jimi Hendrix to play with them at the Isle of Wight(outside the gates,that’s where hawkwind played)but apparently he said no he was depressed,couple of weeks later jimi Hendrix was dead

Hawkwind played outside the gates at the Isle of Wight festival, every drink was laced with acid.
The guitarist at the time (Huw Lloyd Langton RIP) had a bad trip at IOW 1970, think the band were playing in an inflatable tent that deflated in a speedy manner! Huw was so so wasted in cid, that he fled in terror and wasn’t seen for a decade! Not sure how much truth in story, but sounds about right!
He was a good front man for hawkwind, my brother was really into them he’s got everything that hawkwind brought out, a big collection.
Both Nik and Robert Calvert were equally good frontmen.
Check out the Stonehenge 1984 dvd with Nik in full body suit and obviously high as fuck. That was Alan Daveys first gig with Hawkwind too, 99% genuine Lemmy replacement, fantastic bassist Alan.

One of my all time favourites. I was fortunate enough to see Arthur Lee play play the album in full in Liverpool about 20 years ago. I might have been a bit stoned stood at the front

I was real lucky too and caught the forever changes tour at the 02 with half orchestra, and stripped back in king tuts and queens hall with baby lemonade, absolutely amazing gigs.

I was at the Queens Hall gig too. Kind of wish he stopped playing just a little earlier, the new songs were funny but maybe not so great. "Maybe the People" is just such a classic track.

Ghost writers or not you’ve got to admit they can rap! I honestly don’t think they do have ghost writers or that they’re a gimmick though. They’ve said in interviews they write with the help of their grand kids for current slang plus to date I haven’t found any evidence to say that they had prior connections with anyone like that in the music industry who would have ghost written for them. Time will tell though and I’ll happily stand corrected! (Maybe not happily as some of the magic would be lost but still lol). Anyway check out the track in the link if you haven’t already. Banger!
They don’t lip sync, they do live gigs. The videos look like lip syncing as the video clips are recorded and paired with the fully recorded and mastered track and that’s obviously not a perfect match.
Depends who your listening to. Young rap yea. But there’s plenty of quality out there. Cheat codes by black thought and danger mouse is a great album that was released earlier in the year. Check it out mate
Just have to listen to them albums never see greatness like that again lol. Kendrick was good tho

Jon Hopkins is a classically trained pianist turned techno genius.
One of his recent album recordings, music for psychedelic therapy, caught my ear a while ago after the release of the promo track, Sit around the fire with East forest and the late, great Ram Dass.
This album is, in my opinion, the ultimate chill. There are some live ambient recordings on this track which give it so much natural flow. For example, Jon and his associates travelled to Tayos Cave in Ecuador and stayed in a the caves for a few days while collecting audio samples of waterfalls. There are birds, butterflies and flowers, some bloops and wooshes etc
With not a single drum beat
The album evolved from there after 10 days in caves, back to London and after a while, during lockdown was compiled into the album.
During this time Jon would take notes while under the influence of ketamine and then work to make any changes.
The albums length is supposed to last the length of a ketamine trip.
Now I don't use ketamine or mushrooms, nothing wrong with that, I've had my share. However there are recent studies to suggest that micro dosing psychedelics can be used to treat a plethora of human psychological issues including depression, anxiety, ptsd, alcoholism and probably many more. This is a good thing helping to remove stigma away from what was thought to be a bad substance. Education is needed not prohibition.
I do use this album in my own way and I fucking love it.
I'm just going to leave that there for now. I need to vape some bud.
If you do trip, shroom,dmt, meditate I recommend this accompanying soundtrack.
If you just want to chill I recommend this sound track.
I'm going to go vape now and put it on.

I used to listen to Digitally Imported FM on TuneIn when they had their stations on there. I used DI FM's Chillout station to listen to in bed. So many stations to listen too!!

Came out Friday being a NIN fan it's been on my radar for a while
Really enjoying it, as an album it flows well and has some cracking tunes and is 42 mins long with 13 tracks meaning nothing outstays it's welcome and yeah if you can give it a go.
I'm struggling to pick standout tracks as I keep changing preference on them 😂

Happy Mondays VS Stone Roses
if it was for a night out on the town (you know it'd spill over into the next day) I'm going Mondays. For albums contributed it has to be Roses. Tbf I love them both
Stone Roses 'I Wanna Be Adored', 'Where Angels Play' and 'Elephant Stone'. Don't make music that even comes remotely close now.
They are both legends. The Stones roses album is probably the most perfect album of its time, with exception maybe being the LA’s album. Happy mondays had some tunes though.

Me too. Frank Zappa was the most musically-curious artist in my life time. He once jammed with a South American group of Pan Pipe players and combined them with the Irish band The Chieftans along with his consummate guitar playing to create the most wonderfully-bizarre set I've ever enjoyed.

No. As I understand it, Frank didn't turn on anymore from a young age, if at all. A confirmed cigarette chain-smoker, there are records of strong tobacco being used to get high, but that's such a longshot. Frank's talents were his own, embellished by his creative genius; a real American Hero.
Frank once did a Pony ( a crap, defecation) on stage during a set. He then opened a case containing $25 000. He said that if anyone can do something more gross, they can take the money.

Apropos Zappa, a rather excellent 'Tribute Band' (I know, stay with me) Called The Muffin Men. I saw them at the Phoenix in Exeter a few years ago. This from Wiki will give a measure of the quality of the band

Loved to have seen them or the real deal, Zappa was reportedly a dictator when it came to the band, bit like James brown. One mistake you get a warning, two mistakes and start looking for a new band.

When this album dropped over Christmas I didn't think anything of it. Thought it was pretty mediocre.
I listened to it stoned and it got much MUCH better. I listened to it rolling on molly and it got MUCH better still. I listened to the first 3 tracks during my first mushroom trip, and I firmly believe I connected to it on a different level. Went through a full ego death on my first try, with this as the soundtrack. I'd avoid the second half of "Underground Big" though, lead singer goes on a bit of a rant for 24 minutes.

Friends we have some amazing news. Mac Miller will be releasing a posthumous album titled Circles on January 17th. This is single from that new album.
It's almost too much to listen to. Some of the lyrics are so surreal now he has passed. All I know is it's beautiful music and I'm glad I get to hear it. Enjoy.

Thanks for repping Funny Death lol, he's a great guy and very passionate. I've never actually known anyone who has listened to his stuff and not liked it. The best albums for me are Love letter to Japan, Magic is Real and Half Present.

It’s quite intuitive to use and it gives you an almost unlimited bank of seriously powerful sounds to play with.

haha I'm still in that "everything seems better with weed" stage. I only smoke like once a month at the moment and my tolerance is literally zero haha. But yes it is very fun

Not had a chance to put it on myself, will get to it after I listen to Circles by Mac Miller =) I had a quick listen to the song ft. royce earlier, sounds pretty decent.
There seems to be quite a few songs with Royce tbh, it's a good album, but i need to have a re-listen myself, as some of the song's are bangers, but others i weren't feeling too much, but as em is a lyricist, the lyrics probably just went over my head.
Still haven't had a chance to listen to it, will put it on just now. Just noticed that actually didn't even look at the track list. Yeah I get that sometimes, also sometimes his rhymes are a stretch. =p
Last night i was just listening to the album on repeat and it's grown on me really quickly. My opinion has definitely changed, at first i thought it was an average album like a 6/6.5/7 out of 10, but now i honestly will give it an 8.5 or a 9. It just keeps getting better tbh.
Yeah I feel you mate it is pretty dense with the lyrics, definitely takes a few listens to appreciate.
