American police can take all assets (even houses) from anyone they SUSPECT. The person does not even have to be accused, let alone charged or convicted.

The assets are either kept by the police or liquidated and shared with other government operators. A difficult court battle is required to get the assets back to their rightful owners even if they have committed no crime at all.
