At 52 I thought I’d seen it all, not been scared for a long long time but then I saw Martyrs and whilst it didn’t scare me like Halloween did when I was much younger, it’s such a visceral experience that it’s become one of my favourite movies. Just don’t make the mistake of watching the US remake, it’s shit.

Never heard of Martyrs so just looked it up. Jeez that sounds heavy and dark! Will check it out some time. 👍

Nocturnal animals messed my head up more than any horror has done in a while. A lot of horror I like has to be more based on an interesting premise like martyrs, though a lot of horror made is targeted for PG-13 as that can command a box office so the films are more gore based but lack the total brain fuck.

It depends what you want from horror and also you possibly need to empathize with the victims. The American version of the ring I decided I was on the side of Samara so I turned it off. I like the Japanese version as it has a sombre ambience. Jump scares get very tiring very quickly and tune me out, though some only like jump scares as it is more popcorn.

You have to say what types of films you used to enjoy. If you want nasty I would put funny games above martyrs as martyrs actually has a reason. Funny games is just pure sadism. Martyrs I put off for a long while, I really enjoyed it when I watched it as the premise is very bizarre.

The Ritual was pretty enjoyable.

Midsommar is amazing, but even better in my opinion is "Hereditary" by the same creator. My favorite to date, and I've watched hundreds of horror films.

Not so much a movie, but the last series of Black Mirror saw a slight deviation in its final episode, rebranding as Red Mirror, a full on horror focused strand.

Demon 79, its debut offering is an absolute blast, up there with some of the best Black Mirror episodes.

I exclusively watch horror movies all through October. My standards for horror movies are different than other genre's. Show me something a little bit different and I'll consider it worth the watch.

I try and watch a mixture of new and old stuff throughout the month. So far there has been a clear winner in terms of what I've thought about most after watching.

Talk to me (2022)

I watched about 40 seconds of a 2minute trailer and decided ok I'm in and wouldn't advise knowing any more than that coming in. Now the movie didn't scare me in any way but it did have an incredibly visceral reaction on me to the point of having to look away several times and literally dreading what was coming next. As someone who doesn't think of themselves as squimish in the slightest I can't think the last time a movie did that to me.

Also I found out watching that the guys started out as Youtubers who I actually watched a bunch of their stuff back in the day. Which was really surprising because it does feel like a really confident movie and the chemistry/dialogue between characters is actually way better than a lot of big budget movies.

Hostel or paranormal activity are a couple of my favs.
Although im a bit of a woosy when it comes to watching any horror lol

There's a Turkish horror movie called Baskin which has some of the most messed up scenes I've watched. It's pretty slow to get going but when the fun starts, it goes crazy very quickly.

Genuinely engaging and sympathetic characters, a brilliantly entertaining Corey Feldman and the best final girl chase sequence in horror movie history :)

i know its a bit of cliche, but the way things are going: Nineteen Eighty Four (1984). Mainly because we are staring into a post truth world (we are not too far from the powerful being able to decide what is actually true and false and the masses just accepting it) and the planet is being parceled up into spheres of influence just like Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia. Maybe mixed in with a bit of Idiocracy (2006) just like Domutwo wrote.

I'm just back from watching Ghost In The Shell at a London cinema with my son.

It doesn't get any more relevant than that.

I must admit that Blade Runner holds a soft spot in my heart as it blew my mind when I saw it as a teenager.

Not sure if the original question was about prophetic vs simply dystopian but if the latter then there are loads of scifi movies.

Cool you put up Metropolis as the gif for the post, the last film of the Weimar's expressionist movement all predicting the rise of a corrupt authoritarian dictator. On that, the movement not only elevated film from pulp entertainment for the masses but into a recognised art form by having powerful and recognisable themes, all art is political after all.

For me it'd be between Caligari and Metropolis as both were terrifyingly accurate. Caligari for its acute vision of a mad authority [the rise of Hitler through Caligaris madness] or Metropolis where weve seen the full film unravel IRL slowly over the last 100 years

A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors gets my vote

One of the first horror films I saw, along with Halloween 3 which in my opinion is one of the best horrors ever made.

Also watched a weird and addictive series on paramount recently called yellow jackets - also very weird amazing cast I watched 2 seasons in a week season 3 this year

its a bad attempt at a remake of the talented mr Ripley. uses shock to fill in the gaps of a bad script. The original Mr ripley movie wayyyy better and deals with the subject matter without need for cringy shock

Oh my god polly I’m still trying to work out if it’s genius or just a string of disturbing events designed to shock so frequently you can’t look away don’t think a lot of those scenes subjects have been in a commercial film before, I’m sure there are films that cover the bath or the funeral but was so shocked yet couldn’t look away, one of the weirdest things I’ve seen in a long time, that actors compelling. Do feel though it should have had a warning at the beginning as not sure I would voluntarily, knowingly watch a movie with those subjects. The films so complex I almost feel I need to watch it again but haven’t as some of those images are seriously seriously fucked up, the kind shit I would not expect to watch by accident if you get what I mean. It’s like the dark web made a movie

I loved listening to Sophie Ellis Bextor on the radio. She tells how she was obviously thrilled to hear they were going to use the whole of ‘Murder On The Dance Floor’ in a movie but didn’t know much about the context. Gets invited to a private pre release screening. So she takes her mum, grandad, eldest son- the whole lot!

10am in the morning. She’s burning up for her family as they watch those scenes. But no song. End of the movie, no song. She’s thinking “oh no!…are we in the wrong screening?!”…then it clicks back in with the closing scenes and her song and she’s thinking “could’ve been worse!” 😂😂😂

After not doing much / any coursework and being told I’d fail my gcse, I did buckets before every one….

Turns out, I passed them all without the % from coursework 😂

I saw this in the cinema when I was very young. Absolutely nothing like the cartoon, so I wonder how it was pitched and commissioned when the cartoon was shelved due to the lack of toy sales to kids? There's not a lot of merchandise you'd be able to sell off the back of this film.

MOTU was birthed from a world similar to Conan the Barbarian, see “Mastering the Universe: He-Man and the Rise and Fall of a Billion-Dollar Idea” book by Roger Sweet and David Wecker. Conan features a storyline of the hero fighting against an occult group that worships a snake god-Set. Set was an Egyptian god of darkness who bestowed great powers in his followers. The occult group features shape shifting reptilians, and in the spin-off cartoon series, Conan the Adventurer, Conan would fight them and send them back to their dimension (David Icke claims this to be the fourth dimension which is undetectable to humans due to the reptilian genetic engineering). Without digressing too far into Conan, I’ll just leave it at that, snake worship, reptilian shape shifters, so on and so on.

Getting back to the subject at hand; there are different variants of the MOTU story. There have been a few different reboots of the tale between its comics, tv shows, and movies. I will discuss the main idea that broadly covers most of the stories.

MOTU takes place on a planet called Eternia, where King Randor and Queen Marlena have a son named Prince Adam. Prince Adam has a sword that magically (*literally-”magic”) transforms him from a wuss to He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe. Prince Adam, a.k.a. He-Man, had a sister who was abducted and lived on another planet called Etheria, where she would later on in the series use a similar sword to transform into She-Ra. The characters and storyline revolve around He-Man and the good forces battling against Skeletor and evil forces. Castle Grayskull is the home base for the good, where as Snake Mountain is home base for the evil. Both good and evil forces use magic, spells, interdimensional travel, telepathy, and other mysterious forces to battle. The evil forces worship serpent gods and have many reptilian features.

The reptilian and snake worship fall into David Icke’s (and other theorists) theory that the reptilians genetically manipulated humanity and can interdimensionally travel to our world. These reptilians hold powerful positions in the Illuminati, which are bloodlines that have secret, occult knowledge. Occult knowledge uses magic, spells, interdimensional travel, telepathy, and other mysterious forces to control humanity (the same things found in MOTU). These Illuminati bloodlines possess the same esoteric knowledge that our ancient ancestors did. This is why you find so many statues, buildings, and religious symbols in the Western world in cities such as Washington D.C.


These cities were built by Freemasons who are arguably members of the Illuminati (when the initiate gets high enough into the group). You’ll notice that there is so much Egyptian god symbolism throughout our entire western culture, it’s hard to miss. The ancients worshiped “sky gods” because they didn’t understand that these gods were actually reptilian extra terrestrials. This idea is explained through ancient astronaut theory, as found on the show Ancient Aliens and elsewhere in literature from researchers such as Erich Von Daniken. I don’t want to get too far off of the subject, but take my word on it for now, research later.

Now I’ll discuss some of the characters in the MOTU universe who exhibit features found in occult and ancient religious beliefs.

Characters and Locations in MOTU:

Eternia: Located at the center of the universe. The concept of a “center of the universe” is a mythological belief referred to as the “axis mundi.” This is the belief that Heaven and Earth can meet in one place. History of the MOTU civilization includes an ancient culture called Osirians (derived from the Egyptian god- Osiris) with advanced technology. Within Eternia there are many ancient sites and megaliths that have mystical powers and meanings.
Castle Grayskull: The castle that holds the power harnessed by He-Man’s sword. There is a resident sorceress who goes by several different names and forms. She can use magical spells to transform into a falcon and also project telepathically to He-Man and other characters. She also wears snake like armor, yet another subtle detail of serpent worship found in this cartoon.
Snake Mountain: Residence of main villain-Skeletor and his minions. This mountain features a large stone snake winding up its side, reminiscent of Chichen Itza. Chichen Itza is a Mayan ruin in Mexico that features feathered serpent carvings and shadow forms in worship of the snake god Kukulcan. Snake Mountain’s stone serpent is actually the Snake Men’s god, Serpos (the Snake Men inhabited the fortress before Skeletor).
Eternian Weather Station-a location that was owned by He-Man’s father, King Randor. This place allowed King Randor to control the weather on the planet. There are similarities to Alaska’s HAARP antenna array that can arguably move clouds and control the weather here on Earth.


Good forces in MOTU:

He-Man: This is the form that Prince Adam takes when he harnesses the magic of the sword. It is his Superman alias that gives him the strength needed to defeat Skeletor and other evil villains. Prince Adam surely takes his name from the earthly name of “Adam.” Adam was known in the Bible as the first man, but was also known to the ancient Egyptians as “Atum” which was a sun god, similar to Ra. Atum was believed to have been the first god, creating himself and emerging from the waters that existed in the world.
She-Ra: Note the use of “Ra.” Ra was an ancient Egyptian sun god, also known as Horus. He ruled the sky, earth, and underworld. Symbols include a falcon, which is what the Sorceress of the Castle Grayskull transforms into whenever she has to leave the castle. All humans were believed to have been created from Ra
Orko- a magician from a parallel dimension that helps He-Man fight Skeletor and his minions. His powers are usually not accurate and his character is used mostly for humor.


Evil Forces of MOTU (you’ll note that there are vastly more evil forces represented by snakes and reptilians):

Skeletor: the main villain and antagonist of He-Man. He’s an evil inter dimensional being who was related to King Randor. He resides in Snake Mountain and seeks to take over Castle Grayskull so that he can harness all of its mystical powers for evil. He is a sorcerer who can use magic, teleport, and communicate telepathically. He also is a master of illusion and hypnotism.
Snake Men: humanoid snake beings that inhabited Eternia in ancient times. They created Snake Mountain and were directed by their leader, King Hiss. Their eventual defeat forced them into another dimension, such that they were only able to partially exist in the Eternian dimension. This is the exact theory behind the reptilians discussed by David Icke and other conspiracy theorists. They claim that reptilian shape shifters require a certain dark energy that is displaced by the human race through war, suffering, death, and depression in order to fully reach our three dimensional state. They can only exist/shape shift into our dimension as long as they have sufficient dark energy to do so. This is the ultimate reasoning for why the Illuminati are so obsessed with war, death, child abuse, etc. They need these forms of energy in order to pull themselves fully into our world in human form.
King Hiss- leader of the reptilians
Kobra Khan- ambassador between Skeletor and King Hiss
Rattlor- powers include a rattling tail, a deputy to King Hiss
Sssqueeze- anaconda with snake like arms that could obviously squeeze his opponents
Snake Face- snakes extending from this character freeze opponents. This is directly taken from the Greek Medusa figure.
Mer-Man: fish humanoid that controls the sea. This figure is taken directly from Greek and other mythology. Triton was the son of Poseidon in Greek mythology and Enki was the Sumerian god with similar characteristics. The Dogon believe in the Nommo who was also a fish god. The fish gods of ancient cultures had fish heads, which is similar to the mitre headdress worn by priests in the Roman Catholic church.
There are many more characters and locations in the MOTU universe, but I mentioned the most relevant. Many of the characters have different anthropomorphism and hybrid characteristics found in most ancient religious figures. There is much more to study if one is interested in the subject.

The series broke several boundaries for children’s entertainment. It was the first series to allow large, muscular characters to physically punch and bring about violence, and it also began the trend of focused advertising towards young children, which was more heavily regulated at the time. These depictions of violence and marketing are both Illuminati staples that are used to brainwash and implant these negative thoughts to reinforce greed, destroy empathy, meanwhile increasing the profits and lining the pockets of the Illuminati members.

Osiris is the mythological father of the god Horus, whose conception is described in the Osiris myth (a central myth in ancient Egyptian belief). The myth describes Osiris as having been killed by his brother Set, who wanted Osiris' throne. His wife, Isis, finds the body of Osiris and hides it in the reeds where it is found and dismembered by Set. Isis retrieves and joins the fragmented pieces of Osiris, then briefly revives him by use of magic. This spell gives her time to become pregnant by Osiris. Isis later gives birth to Horus. Since Horus was born after Osiris' resurrection, Horus became thought of as a representation of new beginnings and the vanquisher of the usurper Set. Can you say God (Osiris) Jesus (Horus) .. just thought i'd leave that hear.... Also this story is far older than egypt ... i too follow the occult ... Trad Witchcraft from the british isles is my forte. And as such my pantheon is made of many gods and goddesses.

Yes, the tale has been embellished. spiralled for ages upon ages and aeons and aeons,,. employed in belief systems and religions. John Dee played a significant role in all Traditional British Witchcraft. I accept your belief that there are many gods, not just one, in the pantheon. It resembles Belief sets. Martial arts will serve as my example. Some people still adhere to a rigid set of beliefs regarding a specific martial art. whether it be karate or boxing. (what happens is division. why i never rule out anything or be biast like some or try to be a narc) Bruce Lee blended the arts to improve himself effectively and politely, which is why he was despised by so many people. Also loved like a God. Despite the existence of mixed martial arts, people continue to argue about which is the greatest art. of fighting styles. 
Use sports as an example as well as religions and storylines about what is "truth" It everything boils down to magic and science, and the realm simulation we are in now is illusions of deception to set reality, not who is the best golfer or "god" or Influencers like those of today spew forth information to mislead others. We now have Logan Paul. Due to the masses he has duped into his devotion, we will come to view him as an idol or deity in the future. comparable to Jesus lol

Well from what i've learned they took on gods from other invading cultures , As representations of the Male (God) and Female (Goddess) or the witch king and queen (Yin and yang) light and dark.
