Bruxism
After having one of the toughest years of my life supporting my partner through a mental breakdown, I find myself with dental pains which I think are down to bruxism.

My partner has mentioned it to me the last week of so and I've started noticing it in myself. Has anyone got experience with this and using mouth guards or any other remedies?

As mentioned by quagmirewrangle bruxism is stress related, in some individuals it can happen with no apparent cause but that doesn’t sound like the case with yourself.
Stress management is first port of call.
Biteguards can provide relief but it has to be the right type.
Soft biteguards are a bit hit and miss and can sometimes make symptoms worse as it’s giving you something to bite on.
Stabilisation splints are the gold standard.
NTI splints provide fast and effective relief - they work. The downside for this particular splint is it’s not recommended for long term use. These splints only make contact with the incisors and leave a gap between your back teeth and in time can cause them to over erupt. I have also seen them cause intrusion of lower incisors.

Thanks for the responses guys. I've just bought a night mouthguard from Amazon to try out and have a dentist appointment for general health check

I've been considering going for hypnotherapy but I'm not sure if it'd be effective or where to even start tbh!

I have that to the point of scarring ... I get mouth guards from dentist, better fitted and they have options in thickness...I couldn't do the amazon ones

mouthguard sounds like a good short-term measure, to prevent damage.

hypnotherapy could help you, but i'm not sure. i would suggest anything that helps you to express feelings and regulate your nervous system (working with a good psychotherapist could help, ideally someone who understands body/mind connections).

hi there,

i work in holistic healthcare. in my experience, issues like bruxism, TMJ etc are almost always caused by stress and unprocessed emotions.

you said yourself that supporting your partner was one of the toughest years of your life. when we are supporting a partner who is really struggling, it can often feel like there is little or no room for our own feelings and experience because the other person seems like such a priority. for the person doing the supporting, this can lead to a build-up of stress and unprocessed emotions in the body. you are probably carrying a lot of stress, thoughts and emotions that have accumulated over the past year, that need to be worked through and released. this is showing up as tension and energy stuck in your jaw.

i would strongly recommend finding practices that support nervous system regulation (e.g. meditation), as well as practices that support working through held emotions that are showing up in your body. one of the best ways to release held emotions is a form of therapeutic journalling called journalspeak, originially created by nicole sachs to help people with chronic pain. if you google it, there's a fair bit of info out there. DM me if you would like more!

Interesting Mr Quagmirewrangle,Ill look into journalspeak ,Ive been grinding my teeth away all my life and now at 58years old I dont have much left in the way of teeth to grind .Ive tried bite guards but struggle to sleep with a mouth full of rubber and I reckon it all stemmed from being given up for adoption as an infant, the stress from that event has never been addressed so thankU will look into journalspeak X

God I love this community. You'd never see this level of support and mindfulness anywhere else
