Rick Rubin changed my life - or at least had a big influence on my musical taste. I vividly remember hearing Slayer's Reign in Blood for the first time back in '87. I was gobsmacked! 28 minutes of total mayhem - it never occured to me you were allowed to do that on a record! Along with Electric by The Cult, and Licensed to Ill by the Beastie Boys, to name but a few, he has helped provide the soundtrack to much of my life.
Did I miss Mars Volta on that list? Top 3 Rick Rubin

I got hooked onto hip hop when I first PE LP and Ice Cube's Amerikkka's Most Wanted got released, so a long ass time ago. I think Rubin worked on Fear Of The Black Planet with PE. Their first 5 LPs are classics in my library

American VS UK rap
I'm sure this will be divisive but which do you think is better UK or American rap? Personally I think American Rap has been better for the past few decades but I do think UK rap is growing and getting better day by day. Any thoughts on it?
Uk rap is rap, US rap is rap, rap is music, music is a form of artistic expression and therefore subjective. In other words one is not “better” than the other.
Having DJ’d hip hop for 20 years and created it myself for about the same length of time I’ve seen a fair amount or music referred to as rap. Even within the UK we have drill, boom bap, grime, r&b/soul influenced rap, garage and drum and bass. All of the above include rap (some more than others) and all are valid forms of expression.
Personally I’m a sucker for more boom bap leaning hip hop. Musically linked to the 90s/early 2000s but there’s plenty of modern day stuff out there and plenty of UK stuff that equals US stuff for me in terms of quality, with subject matter I can better relate to.
Just a few examples of my tastes:

I can’t stand west side gun though his annoying voice and stupid gun noises. Sounds like a little boy. Brings down Griselda as a whole. Benny and Conway are fire though I just think the thug shit has past its sell by date. I’ll listen to 50, big L pun and prodigy if I want the thug shiz. Can’t beat it. But Harry shotta on drum n bass destroys 99% of all rappers across all genres. The guys a monster.
I can't even listen to American shit any more, not even the old stuff that used to be good. UK rap shits all over the US, Americans just aren't with it at all.
True. Unless all you care about is women, money, getting shot, cars and simplistic bars. Nothing intelligent to hear there. Move on. Whenever I hear America rap now, I always think to myself, imagine this in British accent... and it instantly becomes shit, technically and artistically.

American rap has always taken first place, the amount of quality American rappers is a lot, and also guys like K-dot, J.cole... (just some examples), you can't really find their UK equivalent. However, British rap is much better nowadays, Dave for example is one of my fav rappers, so young but so talented his ceiling is incredible. I also think J Hus, Aj Tracey, Skeps, Giggs and Kano are fantastic rappers, but there is much less of quality British rappers for me personally. Like I can list of more American rappers that I like than British rappers. I'm not a HUGE fan of Drake, but a lot of credit to him for making British rap a lot more popular in the US + worldwide. But at the moment the one rapper I see breaking through to American heights of rappers is Dave, so so talented, and he has a natural knack for instruments. He also loves listening to movie soundtracks and different music as he finds it inspiring which I thought was really cool. Shows that he has a keen eye for production as well.
The yanks will always have that crown, but in terms of battle rap, the UK is fuckin miles ahead imo. The US battle rap scene is so disappointing man.

He’s one of them artists that no matter when you go back and listen to he’s still unreal, before the 80s synth stuff he was phenomenal but the new stuff has just taken his style to the next level
Thirded. Incredible album. Somehow manages to starts off an instant classic AND be a grower. It's very special. His look, style and content deserves so much recognition. I saw Tinchie comment on his Insta saying he was the best of British right now so hopefully that's the start of him snowballing his way into the hearts of minds of rap fans across the country and beyond.
Standout track for me is Pat Earrings, which I'd already played roughly 1000x before the album came out. That use of 80's horror synth is just something else. Feel like I'm listening to quality rap while trying to escape the monster from It Follows

I second this, my favourite track keeps changing every week and to me that's a sign of a top album.
This week it's 'Sugar Free' for me! I hope Cas will be around for ages but after listening to the lyrics on that album, it doesn't sound great :(

Great track, it takes you all over the place. The album feels like real master piece to me. Nothing quite like it
I get you man, it truly is a masterpiece. There's something really special about Cas, for me it's his ability to spit over pretty much any kinda beat and he'll make it his own.

Solid list but I’d put Pac above Biggy. East vs West and preference aside, lyrically-speaking, I think 2pac is notch above Big.
tupac had the charisma of a rock star and gravitas of a rebel leader. a great story teller but not as great as mr wallace i think and puffys beats are more consistent than the work of tupac's producers.
Yeah. And anything that Puffy “produced” was made by someone else. Don’t get me wrong, puff daddy was a producer but only in the sense he brought the ingredients together... the ingredients being MCs and producers. The majority of stuff that came out on BadBoy records was produced by The Hitmen (featuring legendary producer Easy Mo Bee) of which he did head up but as more of an organiser than anything else.
Easy Mo Bee is a bad motherfucker and I don't think many realise his scope over the years, Always give daps to anyone that brings him up

No contest for me but understand if people got into him later. Slip Shady and Marshall Mathers LPs got me through some tough times! Low down and dirty on slim shady EP is one of my all time favourites. Really liked Relapse but nothing else had really grabbed me in last 15 years I’d say. Personal opinion!
I think Slim Shady LP is one of the best rap albums ever, but he lost me as a fan with that purple pills, dressing like michael jackson, bizarre rubbing his tummy in the video s##t!
Yeah the actual rapping gets better at times and the production stays awesome even without Dre the thing that surprised me was the videos got worse.
old Eminem was edgy and cool for the time. plus he was white so he had that going for him. nowadays he just comes across as too whiny and political. even though I don't disagree with much of what he has to say. when I listen to music I like to chill and be entertained. not have political messages lazily thrown at me.

Best new rappers 2021 gotta be RX Papi and RXK Nephew, the new dynamic duo. Shawny BinLaden, Lancey Foux, SoFaygo, Jean Dawson and Sematary all go fucking crazy. Detroits new wave is hitting its stride with Sada Baby, Teejayx6, Kasher Quan, Babyface Ray and many many others. Young Thugs many kids (artistically- and in five years the biological ones too) are all on constant rotation, Lil Baby and Gunna run shit but don't sleep on Keed and Gotit. Playboi Carti made two genre-defining albums back to back. Maxo Kream and Sauce Walka killing shit in Texas. Sahbabii is as horny as ever and Young Nudy just as murderous and devilish. You may know them from memes, SpotemGotem is fine just okay but Pooh Shiesty is a young legend in the making mark my words, reminds me of Young Dolph and Gucci Mane. Lucki, Sosa, Future n Uzi stay doing their thing. I can't wait to see what Kanye has in store with us. Bladee and Black Kray have turned a corner and embraced happiness and optimism. Rap is doing great right now

Try Omegle bars 45,52,67,68. A lot of people don't believe he is really freestyling, in that case try one of his live shows or recent appearance on Sway. All on YouTube. Been into rap since the early 90s and I have never heard anyone half as good as Hmack.
Yeah, it's mad how easily he rhymes from the top of the dome, and even when his flow speeds up, it's crazy. I remember seeing his guerrilla bars, that's what got me hooked before the pandemic/lock down began, then Omegle bars made it's debut which is sick too.

I think a lot of people found him in the pandemic because of Omegle bars, only found him a couple of months back myself but just can't get enough. Never fails to amaze. The last one on Omegle bars 68 is my favourite at the moment but so many good ones. Other freestyle rappers use the word once and move on, he makes an entire scheme around it that all makes sense, has double meanings and uses the word in lots of different ways all while switching flows and his timing is perfect. He started as a jazz drummer which is why he is so good on timing/beats.
I really do not rate him at all. Just well prehearsed patterns where you can fling any word in it. Most his stuff was exposed of being scripted also.
Rehearsed patterns is how pretty much every decent freestyler works, and it still takes considerable skill to be able to seamlessly stitch it altogether. Even the very best of the old school battlers would have tons of filler bars and lines written in such a way that a key detail or name could be switched out. Sounds like you're hating the game more than the player with that comment.
If you want pure 100% off the dome, sure it's possible but the flow's stutter or the bars are basic wack 1-2's.
H.Mack is better than most at it, past and present, and deserves his place amongst the freestyle G.O.A.T's.

He does live shows which last for hours, he rapped for 10 hours straight for 1 mil subscribers. Where was it exposed as being scripted? Harry Mack is a trained jazz drummer and has been freestyling for 20 years. Go look at his youtube, if you still think it is scripted I can't help you.

Just diving in because it's a music thread and I'm crazy about music. That said I love all kinds from blues to classical, from jazz to opera, and of course hard rock, synth, pop, soul and everything else - apart from rap. The one music genre that does absolutely nothing for me. Bought the 12" of "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash when it was released and still have it. And that's pretty much where it started and then ended for me...apart from the Fugees doing "Killing Me Softly", but that's all about Lauryn Hill, which is another story.

The Chronic was written by D.O.C 2001 was mainly Jay Z. Luda did bits as well. There are videos of them doing the bars in the way Dre would so he know how to do it

Skinnyman should have had a much bigger career than he did. Council Estate of Mind is a great album.

I think my favourite album would be Ruthless Rap Assassins 'Killer' album or maybe Horns Of Jericho. That's my era, that's my shit. Derek B, Caveman, Credit To The Nation, London Posse, Overlord X, Daddy Freddy, Duke, Hardnoise etc etc. Also agree that Skinnyman never reached the peaks he should have. late 90s early 2000s he was killing it

Best Rap Show You've Ever Been To?
Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg - Snoop UK live debut.
Crowd was bananas, show was over sold, security got rushed multiple times, police abandoned the area, chaos for hours, fights inside the venue everywhere, open weed and crack smoking, coke sniffing, displays of weaponry, dudes getting properly jacked up for their whole shit right in the crowd inside and outside...I got robbed at knifepoint myself...lost a few quid, kept all my blood lol...
Venue was Brixton Academy, about 90/91 I reckon, whatever year it was that 'The Mirror' put Snoops picture on the front page and called him an evil bastard in the headline lol....think it was to do with him being on bail for murder at the time...
Dre and Snoop opened with 'Deep Cover' in pretty much pitch black....crowd went fucking super nuts...no word of a lie, in the first minute and a half of that song about another half dozen serious fights broke out all over the place, people running through swinging shit like woah....fucking mad shit, dre and snoop only stayed on about 45 minutes as the whole shit was out of control so they pretty much fled...crowd went even fucking nuttier...
Took fucking hours to get out of Brixton, full on road block grid lock chaos madness...
But. That 45 minutes they were on stage was honestly one of the most electrifying things I have ever seen...Dre was already a seasoned performer and Snoop was still a kid and was completely fucking amped up and rocking this huge afro that made him look kind of crazy and he was completely into stoking the fuck out of the crowd which didn't help the situation lol....
I been to a lot of hip hop shows over the years but this was on some other fucking level of mad...
Notable mentions go to KRS One, Cypress Hill and Public Enemy - seen all of them multiple times and they are some of the best live performers around, their shows never disappoint and they know how to move the crowd...

But like I could hear it before it hit the mic sort of thing..) and damn...raw, raw talent and soul and well....stunning woman visually you know...fried my weeded brain at the time, I was just like dazed out for 5 minutes, like ahhhhh, damn....lol...Saw her again at a sold out Wembley arena 10 years later...couldn't barely even see her on stage from my pauper seats lol...watched the whole thing on the side monitors...not the same...fuck the fame lol...

DJ Premier - I've seen him in many cities across the world but the show he made in Paris in 2010 right after Guru's death was legendary. He arrived late but we didn't leave the venue before 4am after screaming "Fuck Solar" for hours. Primo is really a legend

I'm younger than some on this thread so don't know too many old school UK rappers. Mainly like old American rappers/mcs from the 90s, but would also give a vote to skinny man. Council Estate of mind is one my favourite albums of all time and its criminal he's not better known (In the mainstream).

There are plenty contenders, but considering quality of his music, duration of career, significance/legacy etc, I think you need to go a long way to better Kano as one of the greats in the UK.
Lowkey, songs banned in USA raided by mi5 no one can match his word play only guy to do chip in a beef. Too real too intelligent.
Dutty goodz is the king for me, chester p, lowkey,akala are also faves, and ocean wisdom for technicality, not so keen on his content but he's got very diverse flows and spot-on delivery.

me and a friend were arguing about which decade produced the best rap, he thinks the 90's but i'm not sure about that, what do you all think?
Rap is ever evolving so I think there a strong case for 80’s, 90’s, 00’s, and 10’s but for me 90’s is what I think of as Rap but every decade has had some big influences on the genre.

Id say it depends which decade you came of age in! Nostalgia plays a part in this kind of question. I grew up in the 90's but id argue the 00's were its best decade. but im biased as that was the decade i got into Hip Hop! Blackalicious, The Herbaliser, Saul Williams etc...
Agree with this! Just moved to the U.K. from the states and started listening to more U.K. rappers. I was over the new “kids” in the states. Maybe I’m just getting old but it all sounds the same. That said, US 90s rap will always have my heart!

Flower power hip-hop. Used to get played in my art classes. Everyone had it on cassette and drew daisy's on everything - it got overplayed and adopted by the masses in my school to point it became cool not to listen to it :)
For me it starts with tribe called quest and ends with Mf doom so thats a good 15 years from 1990 onwards. Smart lyrics and flow is where its at… 😏
The 80's were the best because the start of anything is always the best and it was all pure innovation - everything else afterwards kind of lacks any real originality (calm down... it's only my opinion). I'm glad to see very few people are mentioning grime, or as I call it, the theme tune to a thousand knife attacks.

Very true, beats have always been a bit behind for hip hop in the uk. Pete cannon is the don, illinformed, dirty dike, leafdog all top contendors. I call it Soundcloud Rap but lots of its also called mumble rap.
Yeah unfortunately it falls into the ever growing rap genre these days lol. I guess it's emo rap or something. Even though he sings over like trap beats. I can't stand it but I did watch the documentary on this dude and I really felt for him so I have a new found respect for him.
There’s only two genres in music. Music that you connect with and music you don’t. If you connect with it who cares if it’s rap, country and western, Bavarian folk trap etc

Man, I remember when the first dude round our way got Sky in his house and I would beg him up to record 'Yo..' on Saturday mornings, double bill with Ed Lover/Dre and then Fab 5 after that...was literally the only place in the world I could see a hip hop video or interview back in the days of 4 terrestial channels lol...
As a fat little white kid in a small town YO MTV RAPS was like a whole new amazing world to me. Loved the music and the attitude.
