I used to work for sales in a major brewing business starting in the late 80's and drinking at work was a huge part of the culture. We had replica pub bars in all our offices that were fully stocked and free all hours. We were expected to get out in the trade and drink with our customers. We would entertain around the world with massive drinking sessions, often with visits to breweries. Our sales meetings didn't just end in a pub they often started in a pub! Despite having company cars we had taxi and expense accounts to get us home or to a hotel when we couldn't even see to drive.The rationale was- "well we ain't selling candy!"....
But none of that was ever accepted as an excuse not to do a great job, and thats what you were measured on. If you didn't you were instant toast.
