For the Mazar, I use a small sharp knife to finely slice down to produce a very versatile powder. A small nutmeg grater works too.
For the RS, I take a large matchead of puff and elongate the mess between my palms, moving the pressure and looking in at it frequently.
A thin snake with several dinners inside. Between both thumbs and fingers press the bulges to even up your string. The surface firms up and will hold its shape horizontally with care.
Do two or three at 120mm or less. Mix them into the 'baccy (other tiresome mixing materials are available. What do you smoke?)
It burns very steadily and draws easily. Curiously, the ash forms into a long, thin coniferous profile and will not drop off. I trim it 2-3 times with a scissors, but it may well still be there at the roach.
