A simple method if you have no prior knowledge, is to search the strain on Leafly and see what terpenes it contains.

For example, if you search "Wedding cake Leafly" on Google, you will get a description of the strain along with it's most prominent terpenes. Wedding Cake's most dominant terpene is typically Limonene.

Once you've figured out your terpene preference, simply check Leafly to see which strains contain the terpene(s) you prefer, and tailor your purchases accordingly 👍

It is a fascinating subject if a little overwhelming 🤯

In my mind.. its all bro science at the consumer level. Ive been considering this since trying medical cannabis even then you dont always get repeatability between batches, or will get misdocumented strain genetics and even seeded batches which impact it all with decreased potency.

Indica and sativa can be useful to describe the effects you dont want ie i react well to indica but certain sativa strains keep me up all night.

In an ideal world yes terps and the combinations of terps with the full spectrum of cannabinoids would be what we focus on in with combination understanding what works for us with our own needs specific to our genetics, neurotypes, nervous systems and cannabanoid receptors and required medical effects.

What works for one wont work for outhers but may help inform.

The buying soley on terps is like going and buying on thc percentage from leafly various strains on littlebiggy.

The unknown we cant quantify or qualify without having in hand is the bud quality, grow type, grower preferences, clone or seed, harvest type, strain genetics and phenotype all which can have a huge impact on the terps and the end product.

As an example unless the strain is actually tested for terps from a for purchase sample how can you tell its dominant on linalool or limonene.


For me i keep track of strains that work for me, and what there parents are. Then look for that else where.

Saying that what im looking for sleep chill will generally be indica dominant strains hindu kush, gmos, og kush, or some indica dominant hybrids. Then if im looking for a particular strain for something like rls then i know strains like black cherry punch seem to help me on that respect

That's a top point yeah, grow does massively impact terpenes but strains should be consistent of what terms are dominant

However if you get medical it'll be measured and is always detailed accurately on the label as mine does from releaf.

Biggest issue with weed is misinformation both research and black market sellers. I dont lkke sticking to onr strain for too long.

Mixing up strains with different terps mixes massively helps keeping tolerance levels below an ounce a day though so is helpful on a money saving basis for me too

And the whole sativa/indica underastanding is wildly wrong too, far too simplistic and doestn really work at all

The assumption is that sativa is uplifting and indica is couch lock inducing but its not accurate at all. Haze for example is a sativa and supposedly good for day smoke yet haze is heavy AF on Caryophyllene and mycrene the two terps that help sleep.

The whole sativa/indica misinformation is a symptom of the insane war america and the UK have waged against weed and the total lack of research until the last 30 years, meaning nearly everything the public think they know is utter gibberish

I see weed a lot like autism, every one talks about but very few people have a clue what they are actually talking about

Yeah its essential. The terpenes are the determining factors in how a strain effects you. If you rely on cannabis but dont look at the terpenes then its like taking a random shot at the bar blindfolded.

Sure you may get the THC impact but thats pointless without the right terpenes imho

But I smoke a LOT and for a multitude of reasons, most stoners I know dont know what a terpene is lol
