Which exchange and how?
I used to use coinbase and it was fine, now it asks for a name etc? What do I do?
The last few times, it's been revolut in round-ish amounts (easy enough to use and my account is legit for travelling etc) then sent on to a local electrum wallet
all major exchanges are asking for more details. you just have to give them what they ask for
What you are doing is using an escrow service which is used for many things. What drops through your letter box is a different matter. buy small amounts if your to paranoid. its only what your holding at the very unlucky time. most vendors what reship if the postman returns it because it has the wrong name, so be aware of that to. There are ways to try and hide blockchain activity, you need to be comfortable with crypto though.
I've bought a fair bit before I don't care it's only for me it's always been fine I'm more asking about how to get around the crypto exchange asking me I don't know the names can you just make one up?
Your name must match the same name as the bank it is connected to, or paypal account etc. KYC (know your customer) is all part of exchanges that deal with fiat. OTC is possible, not advisable for people new to crypto. you could look at other ways to get on the blockchain and not use the main ones, your still need to do KYC. there are protocols out there where you can use your credit card, you do pay a premium for that, and also random KYC checks can be frustrating to deal with if your in a hurry.
